Fennell School of Dance follows the International
Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) syllabus for
Modern. Classes are available for both boys and
girls of all ages and progress from Graded
examinations to Performers examinations.
There are 7 Modern Grades from Preparatory to
Grade 5 where pupils will learn set exercises aimed
to gradually develop increasingly challenging
technique. Examinations are encouraged although not
compulsory and give the students a goal at which to
work for. Pupils will be placed for examinations
when their teacher feels that they can perform all
syllabus steps to a good standard and are also
confident in their knowledge of the syllabus.
There are 3 Performers Examinations,
Intermediate, Advanced I and Advanced II which must
all be taken in sequence and only if the previous
examination results in at least a pass mark. These
are the final assessments for students and are
designed for those students who wish to further
their knowledge or progress into the professional
theatre.
Modern classes are very popular with all students
and the dance style now makes up the greatest
percentage of commercial dance in television and
show business. It is therefore vital in the dance
training of the "all round performer". It is the
best way to improve flexibility, tone muscles and
improve co-ordination.
